My 40~ year old coworker (hardcore party-following Democrat, cried when Hillary lost type of person) the other day said to me "you know what Pete, a lot of people say how bad socialism is, but when you look at what it really is, it's not bad at all."
I said "oh yeah?"
She said "yeah, like they have it in Ireland and it works really well there."
I said "Ireland is not socialist."
She looked at me with the whole 'is this dumbass kid really trying to argue on this obvious fact' look, the kind that a mom gives her child when he's making some irrational arguement.
She said "yes, Ireland is socialist." I said "I don't think Ireland has a planned economy" and she replied "no, no no, socialism is when the government gives you free stuff, like healthcare and college and stuff."
I said "oh ok" and went back to work. True story. I'd bet this is the level of knowledge that most people have about socialism, and the scary thing is that people like my coworker are the ones who are actually voting and influencing elections ultimately.
